A beach full of history

Ellinika beach is located on the west coast of Kimolos island at a place called Mavrospilia , just on the other side of Kimolos strait opposite from the village of Pollonia. The beach is known for the ancient ruins at the bottom of the sea and uphill above Ellinika. The ruins are a part of an ancient necropolis and part of a larger settlement that flourished in the Mycenaean period but disappeared due to an earthquake. The most impressive remain of that settlement is the little islet of Saint Andreas, that stands at the entrance of the gulf of Ellinika. On this islet, one can still see some of the remains of the settlement. Apart from its history, Ellinika is an amazing spot for swimming and snorkeling. The beach is not crowded even in August and has excellent views of the sunset. Apart from the last 1 kilometer, the road to Ellinika is mostly asphalt and takes a 20-minutes drive from the port of Kimolos. Watch out for large waves during strong north winds. Also, note that currently there is no beach bar or canteen, so grab some water and light food before you drive to Ellinika.
