Geology

sarakiniko

The shape of Milos island looks like a horse shoe. The most characteristic geological feature of Milos is its volcanic background. In fact, the island was created about 2-3- million years ago by volcanic eruptions. These eruptions ended at about 90,000 years ago, leaving two inactive craters today on the surface of Milos island. This volcanic activity shaped the rocky coastline of the island and created valuable rocks. In fact, mining has been an important activity in Milos from the antiquity until today.

Beaches

kleftiko

The coastline of Milos island is of amazing natural beauty. The most famous beach is Sarakiniko, with the white rocks and the underwater caves that are great for diving. These white rocks are actually lava solidified there over centuries. Other places with underwater caves are Papafrangas and Kleftiko, also known as the Sea Meteora due to the impressive rocks that come out of the sea. The sea region of Kleftiko is located on the southern side of Milos and can be accessed only by boat.
